If you're addicted to alcohol or drugs, then you know how uncomfortable it is when you run out and start going through withdrawals. Detox can even be dangerous depending on what type of drugs you use, how long you've been using them, and if you have medical problems too. It's usually best to go through detox when you're at an inpatient facility so you can be supervised. Here's why this is a safer option than trying to detox at home.

An Addiction Detox Facility Is Prepared For Complications

Detox is the first step in addiction treatment. You have to stop using the drug and get it out of your system before you're in any shape to start counseling and the road to recovery. Detox can be an unpredictable process and when you're in a facility that has experience and skill with detox, you'll be in safer hands even if all that's necessary is supervision. If you detox at home, anything could happen depending on your general state of physical and mental health. Complications may arise that you can't handle by yourself and you may not even be able to call for help.

A Facility Can Provide Detox Treatments

A detox facility is set up to provide medical treatments if necessary. When you detox, you experience a variety of physical and mental symptoms. In some cases, you might need medication to counter some of these effects so they don't harm your health. Other times, you might need medical treatments for symptoms such as seizures. You might even become violent or hallucinate and try to harm yourself or others. During detox, you might become depressed or suicidal and need psychological support. The severity of your withdrawal and detox symptoms can be so bad that they are life-threatening.

You might need medical treatments in the form of medications as well as medical procedures to manage detox symptoms and treat complications that arise. Plus, when you're in a facility, you're never alone so that might lessen your fear and anxiety while going through the process.

There are two general types of addiction detox treatment facilities. One is a facility that only operates a detox program and then transfers you to another facility to begin rehab. Another option is a rehab facility that also has a detox ward where you are medically supervised until your withdrawal and detox phase has passed. Either is a much better and safer option than trying to detox on your own and your chances of success and going on to rehab treatment are improved when you're in an inpatient facility.

About Me
Back Pain: Easing the Symptoms

Only people who live with constant back pain will understand how my days tend to go. On days when the pain is slight, I can manage pretty well. When it flares up, there is no such thing as a comfortable position. Fortunately, I have found ways to help ease the pain and keep going. A friend recommended that I see a chiropractor. While skeptical, I did find that having an adjustment twice a week does help. I tend to rely less on pain medication than I did before, and there are days when I feel almost normal. If you have not considered a visit to a chiropractor, I suggest that you make an appointment. Let me tell you a little about how to prepare for the visit, and what to expect. You may find that those visits end up making your days much more pleasant.
